2012 North Wellington Open Judo Champs

The event was held on June the 23rd and 24th at the IPC Gymnasium in Palmerston North where the venue saw a lot of great Judo from many club representatives from across the North Island.

Ippon for Hiro from Palmerston North Judo Club with Sode SuriOur local players did very well with Hironori (Hiro) Matsuo winning Gold in the Senior Mens Under 66Kg weight category,  and he won gold in the Senior Men Open.

The restricted Kyu Open (Blue belts and under) Gold Medal was won by Jason Pearce who only 2 weeks ago was a white belt graded to yellow so he could compete in the competition. Jason had earlier won the 40-49 years old Male Masters beating 2 Black Belts! Then he went on to get a Bronze in the over 100kg weight division. His efforts were rewarded with a grading to orange belt at the competition.

These 3 Open competitions were the toughest events, and out of 16 clubs and over 50 players, our guys took out the top prizes!

Senior Boys under 55Kg Gold Medal winner was Xavier Hill, and Silver Medallist was Kyle Amos also from our club. Xaview did well to win gold having suffered a head injury earlier in the week, And Kyle picked up his first medal.

Junior girls Over 36Kg Gold Medal winner was Poppy Leney, and Poppy also won bronze in the Junior girls open, and Nina Kereama-Stevenson won bronze in the Under 32Kg junior girls. An excellent effort all round.
